Cannot Attach Documents

I just migrated from Notes 6.5 and cannot add attachments to my emails. Below is a summary of what I have done to try and fix this.

-Uninstalled Notes 6.5 preserving my D:data information/ID etc.
- Installed 8.5.2
System is: Win XP SP3 - Dell Latitude D630

1. Dragging attachment:
a. shows compression at bottom never reaching 100% (hourglass)
b. hourglass stays but no attachment forms.
c. I can use all notes functions normally except hourglass is still in message body window.
( I can even send or close the email to which I was trying to attach/but no attachment)
d. I can exit notes, but have to killnotes on 2 or 3 processes still running after program appears to close.

2. Using paperclip or menu/attach
a. Either hourglasses or generates crash window stating Notes has to shutdown and generate error report

3. What have I tried?
a. Deleting the D:/Temp/ NotesXXXXX folder (and renaming) to regenerate,
b. renaming the cache.ndk file to .old.
c. Uninstalling and reinstalling 8.5.2 client
d. renaming the bookmark.nsf file to .old
e. Attaching with compression unchecked
